NEW STOCK YARDS.

CAUSTIC CRITICISM. HAWERA COUNTY COUNCIL DISCUSSION. The matter of the new stockyards at the railway station and its approaches was again before the Hawera County ■Council meeting to-day, when the conditions provided by the department were severely criticised by couii’cil'iors, several' of whom maintainedthat the job had been most unsatisfactorily in regard to the approach, and the position at the yards. The District Railways Engineer advised that, although the new stock route had been formed in accordance with proposals by local people interested, be was prepared to recommend the department to- grant land required for an extra roadway if the comical would form and metal the road. The chairman said there was no money available for land at feoott Street. The new road had never been discussed at the outset. The council could not spend money on a road not owned by it and not under its control. Or. Winks said the Chamber of Commerce liad made the trouble and they should get out of it themselves. He said that apparently the yards-, which seemed to be first-class, were only equal to what they were forty years -ago. The drovers were very emphatic in their disapproval. The chairman said that perhaps two councillors should inspect the yards Or Winks considered, however, that the men working the yards would look after themselves. He was, however, prepared to go down with the stockmen and isee the conditions. He considered the yards should never have been shiftted to their present location, and they would he a greater source of trouble than before. He understood that residents were taking action and added that in the hot weather tip vards would bo most insanitary and likely to cause much annoyance. . On the motion of the chairman, it was resolved to repty that the council h P „d no intention of making the roadway suggested and that it was entirely a matter for the cleaprtment.
