SLOTTED WINGS ON ’PLANES.
INSTRUCTIONS AS TO THEIR USE (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Sept. 25. The Air Ministry lias issued a general warning to pilots on the • proper use of tlie Handley Page slotted wings device, which is regarded as ■cric of tlie racist valuable aids to flying saf'ety ever invented. The warning points'out that the object Of the slots is to improve the factor of safety by giving increased control when aircraft are brought in an emergency below their minimum flying speed. Unless, therefore, all slotted aircraft are normally flown exactly as if they had no slots, this additional margin of safety is lost. It is particularly emphasised as a criterion of good piloting- that in normal flying slots should never become open except in emergencies.
