OPUNAKE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The usual monthly meeting of the Opunake Town Board took place on Monday evening, those, present being Commissioners C. A. Trotter (chairman), W. Gunson, A. Raynor, F. Hammond, H. Davey and A. J. Brennan. The foreman (Mr. A. C. Donnelly) reported that during the month general maintenance work had been carried out. Pipe making had been done during the wet weather. A letter was read from Mrs. Corkill on behalf of the Ranger Company, thanking the board for the use of the supper room and hall for meetings. A similar letter was received from Mr. H. G. Hutton on behalf of the Boy Scouts, thanking the board for the use of the hall, and asking if the hoard could see its way clear to reduce, the rent, as the Scout funds were not very large.—The board regretted its inability to reduce the amount. Messrs. R. C. Baker and C. Glare wrote asking for permission to erect sign boards in front of their premises. —Permission was granted on the usual conditions.

Mr. P. Dalryxnple wrote asking for a street light to be placed outside or near his residence. —The matter was referred to the new hoard. Mr. A. D. Reid made application for about two and a. half chains of footpath to his residence in Gisborne Terrace. —The application was granted. Mr. F. Loescli. made a request for improvement to the street near his bowsers. The slope on the roadway towards the gutter made it very awkward for filling petrol tanks, and he asked for the road to be. built up. — Referred to the foreman for a report. Newport Motors were granted permission to construct 500 gallon underground benzine tank. Messrs. Richards and McKinley made application for the extension of the entry to their premises rendered necessary by new buildings. They were prepared to meet their share of the cost. —The application was not granted. Dr. Mecredy, medical officer, in charge of the Taranaki district, intimated that he would be prepared to attend a hoard meeting to discuss a drainage system or other matters relating to public health. _ Tlie poundkcoper (Mr. B. vPaltshir©) reported that 14 head of cattle had been impounded during the month, and 10 had been released on the roads.

The question of improvements to the Town Hall was deferred. It was decided to call tenders for forming and metalling of the portion of Domett Street near Dr. Church’s residence.

As the meeting; was the last before the election, the chairman took the opportunity of thanking; the hoard members for their support during his term of office. Ors. Brennan, Hammond and Raynor also spoke, and thanked the chairman for consideration shown. A meeting of the Domains and Cemetery "Board was held after the Town Board meeting. PLUNKET SOCIETY. A general meeting of the Opunake branch of the PJunket Society was held on Monday afternoon. Mrs T. S. Hickey (president) presided over a good attendance of members, including' visitors from Hawera andi Ruhotu. The following ladies, were present from Hawera :- Mesdame® Winks, Crompton. Jobson, and Hoggett. From Raliotu. Mesdiames Wright and Olarke. After outlining the object of tlie meeting, the president called on Mrs Crompton who explained the expenses and other matters in connection with maintaining a resident nurse in Opunake.

Sinclair and H. Young. Tlie foreman (Mr T. Bowman) reported that he had connected 1 the iraiils from the wharf to the incline rails and had planted, sand gra&s near the flagpole. He had made a start to put cam,shears on the west side of the wharf. Metal had been put down on the incline. The roof over the. -blacksmith shop required: urgent attention. Th,© weather for diving had been very bad, and had been very cold and there had been little work done outsidle. A start had been made in preparing th© machinery for inspection. He had the airline almost, 1 ready to, try out the hammer. He ad-j vised the board to notify the Marine Department of the removal l of the flag- j staff. Be understood- that the district I engineer advised cleaning up the liar- I hour outside and then notify the Mar-J ine Department which would give a clean report for shipping. He had ; therefore left off nicking stone from! alongside the wharf and had sent the boat outside. The mole had suffered during the recent heavy seas. There had been a few slipsi last week. He! •asked that the board endeavour to have the machinery inspected as soon as possible. The report was adopted. The ( chairman said little damage hadl been j done to the mole which had stood the weather well. The chairman gave th© hoard notice of intention to move that the board strike the irate for the ensuing year.
