After the four hundred metres race Charlton said: “I am finished with big swimming, i ant going back to the bush.” He had secured second place for six consecutive days. “Two Olympiads’ are enough for anybody,” he add\Vitli Borg two yards' ahead at the 100 metres and five yards at 200, nothing appeared more certain than a win ; even when Charlton overhauled him at halfway in the‘last lap the race was stiilll in doubt. Curiously, however, Borg, Charlton and Gr.ahbe were so intent 5 on their own positions fliat they foreot Zorilla, who was steadily creeping’ up on the other side to' finally win th© race. Bong’s initial lead was reduced inch by inch amidst increasing excitement. Borg turned for the last 50 a touch ahead of Chariton, with Zorilla and OraJbbe dose. Twenty-four metres from home Zorilla took the lead while Chariton was overbakmor Botrg, whose strength appeared to be falling. As Chariton and Zorilla were on tho opposite sides of the bath, it was difficult to judge the .respective positions. The Australian appeared likely to catch up until the last few strokes. Zori’lla was a dear winner but onlv a seconcl separated Chariton and Borg, With Oraibbe another second away. Borg was so distressed that Charlton had to lift hint from the water. When it was pointed out that he had a bad turn in the last- lap, Charlton said that Zoralla swam a wonderful brainy race, was unable to gee him over Borg sheatl owing to the backwash at the bathside ‘ but I swam all out from start to finish I could not have done an inch better. I am delighted to have turned the tables on Borg and to break my own best time.” ,
