CORONATION BALL

The local Town Hall was packed on Wednesday evening last on the occasion of tire coronation of the successful candidate in the recent queen carnival in aid of the. funds of the Catholic Churches at Opunake and Puno-arehu. The- hall and stage were tastefully decorated with flags, greenery, and coloured lights. The ceremony opened with the orchestra playing' an overture- entitled “Our Directors.” The warning of the approach of t,he coronation party was then sounded, and to the strains of “Our Directors” the party entered the hall in the following order: Sword bearer (W. Butturini), crown bearer (J. Connor), sceptre beaft-er (F. Barry), mace bearer (J. Dudley), queen-elect (Miss L. Dovle), attended by flower girls (C. Dovle and S. Brophy), herald (M. Brennan), and train-bearers (P. Brophv and B. Doyle); Princess- Oaonui (Miss M. Taylor). attended by flower girls (Molly Barry and- Betty Fearer) -and train-bearers (P. and V. Hickey); Princess Rahotu (Miss Tv. Ann is), attended by flower girls (C. Murdock and N. Kirkwood), and trainbearers (Willie Fleming and Tom Quiekenden ; ‘ Princess- Opunake (Miss J Hiclcev), attended by flower girls (Colleen Ferrick and C. Hurley), and train-bearers (Afollie Morris and- F. Hickey) ; Princess Pihama (Miss AT. Julian), attended bv flower girls (Audrey Julian and Kathleen Riley), and train-bearers (George Walker and Ronald Riley). After circling the hall the party mounted the dais to the throne, where the warrant speech was read bv the Tx>rd High Chancellor (Mr. R. Fleming), after which be crowned the Queen. The Queen then conferred upon the Chancellor the title of “Sir Richard of Egmont, devotee of the Skating Rink,”

The various princesses paid l homage to iho Queen, and the. following titles were conferred upon them : ‘ ‘Princess Marjorie of Oaonui, chief lady in waiting; “Princess Kathleen of Rahotu, thu d lady of the land” ; Princess Joan ■of Opunake, fourth lady of the land” ; Prirriess Monica, of Piliama, fifth lady of the land.” Tlie Queen’s message to the people was then read by the Lord High Chancellor, and conveyed the following desires: ‘‘To open up the Wiremu Road arid provide good access to mucapital” ; “to prevent the' sand drift on the royal golf links” ; ‘‘to provide proper facilities at the royal port, the possibilities of which are yet unrealised.” After the singing of “God of Nations” and the National Anthem the party left the throne dais and proceeded to the dining room, where supper was partaken of. Afterward® the Rev. Father Kennedy made a short speech, and presented each candidate with a souvenir of the occasion. The remainder of the evening was taken up with dan ring, Brooker’s orchestra supplying the music. Messrs. L. Maeßeynolds, B. O’Brien, F. Vony and R. Fleming carried out the duties of M’s.C.

During an interval the Rev. Father .T. Kennedy made a presentation of a •handsome cheque to Mrs. J. M. Edmonds, who will shortly lie leaving the district.

Til making the presentation lie spoke of the good work Mvs. Edmonds- had done for her church and also for other public bodies with, which she had been associated.

Mr. T. S. TTickev, on behalf of Mrs. Edmonds, thanked all for their good wishes and also for the handsome present. A sit-down supper was provided by the following ladies’ committee': Mesdamos R. J. Morris, T. Mulligan, J. Gearv. D. Ross, Oargou. Ann is, C. Ferrick, A. Brennan, M. Fennell, jnnr., J. Barrett, P. Riley. J. Hickey, junr., F. Rowlands, and Misses Fennell, Munro. Cochrane and O’Brien.

FOOTBALL. The last match in the Des Forges Cup competition was played on Wednesday afternoon, when High School defeated Opunake by 17 to 10, after a good game. Mr. A. Sinclair was , referee. The competition has again been won by Oaonui with nine, points, Opunake being second with five points. \
