A SENSATIONAL RACE,

IN 400 METRES SWIM. CHARLTON SECOND, BORG THIRD. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) (Australian Press Association —United Service.) Received 10.25 a.nt. to-day. AMSTERDAM, Aug. 0. At 'the Olympic, G'ames the 400 metres final, swimming, resulted: — Zorilla (Argentina) 1 Charlton (.Australia) 2 Borg (Sweden) 3 Time, 5.1 3-5, an 'Olympic record. It .was the most sensational race at the Olympiad. Borg set a terrific pace, but was unaible to maintain it when challenged bv Crabbe Charlton and Zorilla. The last named’s victory was a complete surprise, and he finished magnificently. Ohari'ton was superb in the last lap, but whs too late to bridge the gap. Borg collapsed at the finish.. Borg’s time was 5.2 3-5. One hundred metres backstroke final:— Kojac (America) 1 Laufra (America) 2 Wgafct (America) 3 Time, 68 l-ssec., a world’s record. Women’s breaststroke, two hundred metres final resulted: EVauloin Schrader (Holland) 2, Fraulein Muhe (Germany) 3. Women’s 400 metres relay final: United States 1, Great Britain 2, South Africa 3. Time 4.47 3-5, an Olympic record.

NEW ZEALANDER THE BETTER. BOXER. HIS BOUT WITH OANOVA. Received 9.55 a.m. to-day. AMSTERDAM, Aug. 9. Morgan was easily the better boxer / throughout. His extended right, with ‘ which he repeatedly feinted, puzzling the Italian, who was often surprised at the New Zealander’s left swings and uppercuts. The New Zealander boxer Morgan qualified for trie semi-final of the wel-ter-weights by outpointing the Italian Romano Canova to-day. The win was a meritorious one, as his opponent was much, fancied,. Morgan was always the more aggressive, scoring all through the bout. He repeatedly penned Canova on the ropes, whence the Italian was unable to escape Morgan’s vigorous' pummelling®. He attempted to swing in a right to break away, but Morgan always evaded and returned to the attack. The victory was a popular one. Experts are of the opinion that Morgan* lias a fine chance of winning. He shows a good punch, and is able to take and give punishment-. Apparently he reached the top of hi S' form at the critical moment.

Canova once caught Morgan oft’ his guard, scoring a heavy left to the body, hut it was his only effective blow. The third round was briskly fought, the Italian greatly improving, though never mastering Morgan’s right sufficiently to enable him to do much attacking'. The New Zealander again drove the Italian to the ropes, scoring well with uppercuts to the body, but at close quarters Canova generally held liis own. The water polo, which is always prolific of OlCnvnic incidents, provided another sensation in to-riav ‘s final by Ihe surprise German victory over the Hungarian team, which last month defeated Germany by 9 to 0, and Finance fi to 3 and was regarded as certain to win the Olympiad. The New Zealand boxers attended the Queen of Holland’s dance and supper .given to hundred Olympic competitors at the palace at Amsterdam to-night.
