MANAIA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) TEACHERS’ GATHERING. A large gathering of South Taranaki members or file New Zealand Educational Institute,, members of school committees, and others was held in the Oddfellows' Hall ut .Manaia on Friday evening. In welcoming those present, Mr. J. Nairn, president of the South Taranaki branch of the' New Zealand Educsutional Institute, explained that in organising this gathering it was sought to get- away from the school environment and to bring together representatives of the . school committees and teachers of the district, all of whom sought- the advancement of the public, schools. The gathering Was of a semisocial nature, and an address was given by Dr. R. J. Meeredy oni the teaching and practise of hygiene in the school. On the motion of Messrs. Bates and Furrie, supported by Messrs. Lees and Harding, a vote of thanks was- carried to- the doctor for his ad-dress. Air. A. Lees represented the Taranaki Education Board, and there were also present Inspectors Griffin and Henry, who represented the Education Department. $ Supper was provided, and dancing concluded a most enjoyable evening. MILITARY BALL. Great preparations are being made for the military ball to be held on Wednesday night in the Town Hall. This function is looked upon as the ball of the season, and the committee is sparing no expense in making its arrangements. A bus will leave Latham’s garage at 7.40 p.m. BAND CONCERT. The Manaia Band played an appreciated programme of musical items in the rotunda on Saturday night, Conductor Cosgrove being in charge. The items were listened to by a large audience. . ’ ,
