POLAR MYSTERY
MALMGREN’S DEATH. TERRIBLE CHARGES MADE. SOANDINAYIAX ALLEGATIONS. (United Press .Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) (Australian Press Association.)
LONDON, July 28. Terrible charges continue to be made openly by the Scandinavian newspapers concerning the fate of Professor Ma.lmgren. Many British and French papers hint the.ie- was something mysterious in Mahngieu’s death. The “Daily .Herald’s” diplomatic correspondent declares that it is absurd to beat about the bush any longer in the matter of the Italia disaster The charge is openly made in the Scandinavian Press that Malmgren was killed and eaten by his two Italian companions, Commanders Zappi and Mariano, that the third man seen in a recumbent position by the Russian airman Ohuknovsky from liis aeroplane was the half-eaten corpse, and that they ridded themselves of it before they were rescued.
It is also alleged that the story of his having died a month before was a fabrication. If this were true, the story of the two rescued men could not be true. If, as everybody hoped, the story widely circulated and widely believed was also untrue, surely thp Italians would welcome a. full inquiry to bring out and establish the real facts. Plre “Morning Post’s” Oslo.- correspondent states that Nilsson, pilot of the Swedish aeroplane Uppland, confirms the report that the two Italians brought only Malmgren’s compass and not his diary. The entire Swedish expedition was greatly surprised at their not- do ing so since it was certain that such an experienced man as Malmgren did nol omit to keep a. diary, which would supply valuable information on the ill-fated expedition. SWEDISH RESCUERS WELCOMED. STOCKHOLM, July 28. The Swedish rescuers and the Italia survivors arrived at Tvbylbo to-day. General Nobile’s car was uncoupled for another route. Only Behounek. the Swedish airman, and his sister, left their berths. They greeted friends, including Rehou nek’s fiancee. The Swedish rescuers wore warmly welcomed, by the Minister of Defence at Stoekliaim in the presence of cheering crowds. ITALIANS REQUEST SILENCE. WARSAW. July 28. The newspaper “Kurier M'arsawski” reports from Moscow that the Italian Minister has reouested the. Soviet to forbid Cbukbnovsky and other members of the Russian rescue party to give interviews regarding General Nobile’s expedition. The Soviet has- not vet replied.
