FINED FOR POSSESSING OPIUM. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 28. ■ Half-paralysed on one side, Yee Chong, the Chinese qua.rtennaster on the ship Ranella. appeared at the court to-day. and was charged with being found in possession of opium and with having imported that drug into New Zealand. The defence was. that most of the crew were addicts and that- the opium aboard was- for their use. In view of the fact that 15 lead tubes of essence were found in the acmsed’s clothing, however, Mr. Page S.M., thought that it looked as it was more than meant- for Yee’s own use, and he imposed a fine of £25 on the first charge, in default a month’s imprisonment, Uee to be placed aboard *the shin before she left Wellington.
