SITTING OF MAGISTRATE’S COURT

Mr R. W. Tate, S.M., presided at yesterday’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Manaia. CIVIL OASES. 9 Judgment was given by default on the following undefended civil cases: 0. S. Chong v. K. Revan, £ll ISs sd ; J. E. Stevenson v. A. E. Burrows, £S; Mary Carpenter v. J. E. Hickey, £2 10s. BY-LAW CASES. E. Leach, charged with riding a bicycle on main highway at night without a light, was fined 10s and costs 10s. To Ngolni and Poke Whenua, for driving a cart without lights after dark, were each fined 20s and costs- 12s. TRUANCY CASES. For failing to. send a child to school, eight charges, R-. Robinson was fined 10s with os translation, fee on each charge with costs 10s. On a similar charge Tei Daymond was fined 10s, translation fee 5s and costs 10s. FAILURE TO MAINTAIN. A charge of failing to maintain his wile and children under a maintenance order, was preferred amaingst A. E. Hawes. It was shown by Constable Scanned that arrears totalled £66 13. S 6d, and that defendant had paid only. £2B 15s since the order had been made. A sentence was imposed of one month’s imprisonment in New Plymouth gaol. IN HOTEL AFTER. HOURS. J. J. Malone, J. Arthur, W. Peacock, and, O. Gernlioefer were charged with being in the Waimate Hotel during prohibited hours. .Sergeant Henry said that on June 13, Constable Scanned visited the hotel at about 9.40 p.m. and found the licensee and four men in the passage. He asked what they were doing and they said they had come in on business with a trotting horse. Malone .said this was correct and that the other three had accompanied him. The .sergeant said this was a case wjxere men had come “not to. see a man about a dog, but about- a horse.” Elac-h was fined 40s and 10s costs.
