KAPONGA.

CITIZENS’ MASQUERADE BALL. The inaugural ball under the auspices of the Kaponga citizens, in aid of the fund to provide Christmas entertainment for the children of the district, was held in the Town Hall last evening. * The hall and stage had been tastefully decorated with ferns, evergreens, and streamers by Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Knight, who have earned _ a welldeserved reputation for their artistic ideas and execution in this important department of local entertainment. From the hall ceiling depended an intricate dome of multi-coloured streamers radiating to every point, of the compass, imparting a heightening effect to the already gay and colourful scene. Messrs. W. G. Cran and J. Firth ably officiated as masters of ceremonies, and successfully guided the destinies, for the time being, of fully 80 couples, who tripped the light fantastic until the early hours 1 to the strains of Coburn’s orchestra of five instruments and effects. Among those wearing fancv costumes were: Mrs. Phillins (Hawera) “Table Tennis.” Miss Phillips’ (Hawera) “Yellow Three Castle Cigarettes.” Miss Emmett (Hawera) “All HI art's.” Miss Ritter (New Plymouth') “Night.” Miss A. Noonan (K anon gal “Modern Apache.” M>ss Y. Lister (Kaponga) “Shiek’s Daughter.” Mr. H. Keighlev (Matnpu) “Green Three Castle Cigarettes.” The costumes parade was judged by Mr. and Mrs. C. Paterson, of Kapuni, and their choice of best fancv costumes• fell on Miss V. Lister, “Shiek’s Daughter.” and Mr. H. Keighley, “Green Three Castles.”

Extras were contributed by Mrs. I. Evans. Miss M. Hickland (Riverlea), and Mr. C. Whalen (Kapuni). Arrangements for the service, in several relays, of a dainty find bounteous supper were in the capable hands of a committee of Indies, comprising Mesdames T. Evans (supervisor!, C. E. Betts. G. S. W. Bell. J. S. Charters, W. Carrington, J. J. Davison, A. Fraser, J. Firth. J. Guv, S. C. Knight. T. McMillan, W. H. L. Roberts, and C. Tonkin, assisted bv the following bevy of waitresses: Misses M. Eva.ns. M. Hitchcock, E. and I. Melville. M. O’Neill and A. White. The room and tables were nicely decorated with ferns and spring flowers hv Mesda'mes W. H. L. Roberts and J. J. Davison. An open waltzing competition, judged by Mr. E. Gibbons (Riverlea). in which four couples took part, was won bv Mr. W. Fever and Miss E. Melville. Winners of o+h er competitions were: Spot waltz, Mr. W. Davis (Hawera) and Miss M. Laurent (Hawera); Monte Carlo waltz, Mr. _ R. Noonan (Kaponga) and Miss Y. Lister (Kaponga); Mr. L. T. Aylward (New Plymouth) won a bottle of_ perfume. The efforts of the organisers of the ball were rewarded by a substantial addition to the fund.
