MISSIONARY EFFORT.
.METHODIST CHURCH ANNUAL SALE OF WORK.
The effort, made yesterday afternoon and evening, in the Methodist hall, on behalf of the Women’s Missionary Auxiliary, proved very successful and resulted in a considerable addition to the funds available for mission worn. The hall was artistically decorated with flowers, ferns, greenery, and coloured streamers, and looked most attractive with its lines of stalls where goods of various kinds were kept for sale. These included the following: 1/lain work, Mesdames E. Dixon, R. Foy, Boucher; produce, Mesdames Tozer senr., Tozer junr., and W. R.ae; cakes Mesdames Saunders, Furness, and Ken;on; flowers, Mesdames Hey, Emmitt, France and Muir; bran tub, Mrs. Barron; sweets, the Young Women’s Bible Class members; tea rooms, Mrs. Mills, assisted by a committee of ladies.
The opening ceremony was performed by Mrs. H. E. Pacey, of Palmerston North, president of the auxiliary for the Dominion, who expressed her pleasure at being present and paid a tribute to the loyalty of Hawera, which centre had the highest average donation in the Dominion. She said she hoped that woiild be an incentive to go ahead in the future. The society had to provide for thirteen sisters in the mission field, ten for the Solomon Islands and three for the Maoris, and- needed all the help possible by everyone if they did not wish to see them withdrawn. With the hope of future development of the effort, Mrs. Pacey declared thevsale -open for business. A pretty bouquet was then presented by Master Peter Barker to Mrs. Pacey, and was kindly acknowledged. At the opening, devotional exercises were led by Rev. E. S. Emmitt, and then a welcome was tendered to Mrs. Pacey by Mrs. Williams and Mr. Enimitt. With the visitors on the stage were 'Mrs. Hill, the senior member, at the special invitation of Mrs. Williams, on behalf of the auxiliary and of the Ladies’ Guild. She presented bouquets to Mrs. Hill, and sent one to the hon. secretary, and received one from Mrs. Curtis as an earnest of the esteem in which she was held by the auxiliary. In the evening there was a short programme of musical and elocutionary items and two competitions—nail driving for ladies, in which Mrs. It. Foy was first and Mrs. Itae second, and hat trimming for men, won by Mr. Emmitt, with Mr. 'M. It. Jones second. The total proceeds were £sl, with a little more to come, and to that has to be added the sum of £l3 received from the “bring and buy” afternoons.
