POLICE PROSECUTIONS AIT INVERCARGILL.'
HEAVY FINES IMPOSED

At the Police Court, Duncan. Alexander Stuart was charged' with being unlawfully in possession of a still at Otapiri Gorge and with unlawfui'ily making spirit®. The accused pleaded guilty and was fined £450 on the fust .charge aocl:'£so on the .second.
James Robertson was similarly charged m connection with tire still found at Awairna Bay. He was finedi £SO on each, charge.. The Collector of Customs: isaid that the making of whisky bad been motoron® in Southland for the last fifty years. He estimated the loss to the Government during that period at tens of thousands, of pound®. He stressed he fact that it wais being made, wliollesa.’.e and that men offered) it for sale in Dunedin. Both the accused were relatives of the Macraes, who ware fined four years ago for running a still at Spiungh’ills. _ The night previous to Stuart’® arrest twenty gallons were ?olrl at.
