The engineer (Mr. J. \Y. Spence) repor Led : —. West Riding.—The grader has been run over the side of the Opuuake No, 2, Rowan, Manaia, Palmer, Duthie and parts of the Opuuake No.l and Hastings roads. On the Opuuake No 1 the nooden culvert in front of Mr. Hughes’ property lias been strengthened for 12 reet to* enable tlie building up of the road-side. Two 21-inch pipes 'have been used in the Manaia Road to enable the widening of " the formation. Metal patching has been done on the Palmer North, Duthie, Hastings, Cardiff and Opuuake No. 2 roads. Willows Jiavo been cut back on the Cardiff Road_ and a bridge approach on Opunnke No. 1 near Malioe has been attended to.

Mangaelni Riding.—General repair work in the way of water-tabling, culvert and outlet cleaning lias been carried out on the Mahgaotukm, Tututawa, Mangaelni Main and Puiiiwhakau roads, metal patching also being done on the two latter roads.

South Riding.—Eight and a-lnvlf chains of Swansea Road have been coated with shingle and pit metal, 64 yards being used. The pit metal, which was carted from the pit some months ago, has been put through tlie chip crusher and will be used for repair work on the 1 Wingrov© Road. General repair work has .been carried out on the Bird, Wingrove, Finnerty and Mountain roads. The drains on the Bird ltoad been cleaned out.

The ranger and inspector (Mr. S. J. Cuff) reported that stock had given little trouble. Poundage had been collected on 32 head. First applications for driver’s and rider’s licenses had been numerous, 19 applicants being examined ail'd the same number of licenses- being issued. The amount taken for licenses so far this year had almost reached the total for 1927.-so that by the end of this year a. big increase could be expected over last year’s figures'. Weeds and corners of hedges had been attended to wherever necessary. Riders or drivers without lights had not been encountered during the (period. The penalties inflicted by the court seemed to have “cured” that class of offence for the time being. Mr. C. A. A far chant was appointed to act as assessor fo tlie council in connection with valuation business.

Rates were fixed as follow for the year.—North -Riding. 2d; South Riding, 1 5-Sd; East Riding. 2d : West Riding. M o-8d; Mangaelni Riding 3d.
