NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “Maecenas.”) Now that the acceptances for the Wellington meeting have appeared, interest in racing in these parts will revive. * # * * * Trainer E. George, who went to Australia last month, has returned, and was amongst those present at the Te Kuiti meeting. •*•*•*** An effort was made to secure Beau Cavalier and Glendowie as runners for the steeplechase .at Bllerslie last Monday. Mr. Bothery was willing to run Glendowie, but Beau Cavalier’s owner preferred to wait for the Wellington steeplechase. * » Sr w # Kawini is well just now and, if brought south, may have better luck in some of the big jumping races than was his lot last year. * W *• •* * The connections of Glendowie were quietly confident that the gelding would beat Beau Cavalier- over ten furlongs on Monday last, with an advantage of 1 Sib, but Beau Cavalier never, gave him a chance, and as Glendowie was well placed all through the race no excuse can be offered. Te Monanui developed slight colic when at Auckland last week, hence his non-appearance at the Te Kuiti meeting. *** - * Last year S. Henderson rode Beau Cavalier in all his great racing feats, and was also on the gelding when he recently won the Great Northern Hurdles. Admirers of Beau Cavalier will be pleased to hear that Henderson has been retained for the crack “chaser” in the Wellington Steeplechase.

The three placed horses in the Waitomo Handicap at the Te Kuiti meeting filled similar places in the Cornwall Handicap at the Great Northern meeting. ***** When Star of the East fell at Eller, slie last Monday, he was a very tired gelding, and he could not rise for several minutes. He “chanced” several fences, but Jockey Deliere kept on like an old time rider- until tire gelding fell. *. * tt * * Potoanui is very well just now and backers of Kauri Park were very lucky to secure half a dividend last Monday. The rider of the former was questioned by the stipendiary steward after his poor display. Ho claimed that he rude to orders. That and his inexperience saved him a penalty. * w w * * The imported L orient. 11. was .very unlucky to suffer a. narrow defeat at Ellenslie last Monday, for just as the tapes were released lie moved hack and lost several lengths, Which he reduced to a half neck ere the post was reached. Lorienb 11. need only reproduce liis English form tp win. races here’. *****

Kin* Lu, Quen Ajrcfh, and Waltzer atll won races ah the recent meeting of the Te Ivuiti Racing GTnib and the trio will compete at the coming Wellington meeting, but despite their recent successes, they will have the hardest part to do to gain further successes at Wellington. Of the three, Queen Audi may do best.

Good as Beau OavaiMer was last year, he is a better gelding now. and despite Ms 11.13 in the Wellington Steeplechase, he will prove very hard to beat, unless the track becomes very heavy, in which case, his task will prove more formidable. Although conceding 231 b t 0 many of his opponents, with the disadvantage of an outside position in the biig held .at Eller site on Monday last, Beau Cavalier won easily. * * nr * *

When a two-year-old of great pi'omise, King Ini, injured a shoulder, and for a. long time this interfered with his beginning quickly an .races, but his owner-trainer stated on Monday last that he had recently succeeded in removing the disability, sq King Lu should show even better form from now on.
