POULTRY INDUSTRY.

NORTH ISLAND ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL MEETING

The annual meeting of the North Island Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Association was held at Palmerston North last week, Mr. J. T. Bryce, (president) occupying the chair. Delegates were preisent from -all over the North Island, and included Messrs., Patterson (Wanganui), A. J. Davey (Stratford), L. O. Hooker (Hawera), J. K. Hawkins (New Plymouth), and W. A. Moore (Canary Club). There was a. lively discussion at the outset of the meeting. The chairman

explained that- a number of affiliated clubs had not forwarded the names of their delegates in the time prescribed and that the- council had therefore appointed representatives to act- for these clubs. He requested the secretary (Mr. T. Bruce) to read the names of delegates entitled to- vote. The name of a Manawatu fancier was read as the representative of New Plymouth, and Mr. Hawkins immediately questioned this, saying that he had been duly appointed hv the New Plymouth Club and 1 that the association had been notified to this effect

some clays oetore by telegram. The chair-man : I can only act in acrordnnee with the rules, and New Ply-

mouth .did not forward the name of its delegate in the prescribed time. Mr. Hawkins: Well, Mr. Chairman, i. am here to represent New Plymouth, and claim that I am fully entitled to do so. .The chairman: Not in accordance "'i th the rules'. A number of delegates argued that they had never been able to get a copr ol the rules —in fact, had never seen them. Clubs were therefore in the dark. They contended that Mr. Ilawkins was entitled to represent- the New Plymouth Club. a Afr- Bruce: New Plymouth is not entitled t-o a delegate, for another season. It- is not financial.

Mr. Hawkins said the- New Plymouth Club had just held its show, and therefore there had been no meetmg of the committee. The affiliation ree had always been passed at the first meeting following the show, and this would be done this year. It was a remarkable thing that it had never been

q uost-ioned before. Mr. Moore (Auckland): We have never been able to get our bands on a copy of the rules, and I am not conversant with them. The point I would | like cleared up just now is this: If i\ew Plymouth is- not entitled to its

delegate on the grounds stated, why (aid the council itself appoint someone |to act for New Plymouth ? M*- Hooker : The position is absurd. \\ hat is the- amount of New Ply mouth’s affiliation fee. Mr. Chairman? I will pay the thing myself. Mr. Hooker thereupon wrote out a.

cheque for the- required amount of £4 4s, and said ho would do the same for other clubs who were -not financial if there were representatives present. Y a copy of the rules how could Hubs keep on side with the association. It was just about time matters were put on a business footing. Continuing, Mr. Hooker asked what the position was in regard to Hawera. The chairman: Thev are not entitled to a vote. Mr. Hooker: Why? The chairman: Because they have no poultry club. It. is a winter show. iVfi. Hooker: But you have always accepted our affiliation fee. and surelv wo are entitled to a vote. The chairman: This is a, poultry pigeon and canary association, run in tlie interests of fanciers, and the rules say that it is only feathered clubs that

are entitled to vote. . Mr. Hooker, said he was there to assist the association, and it had meant considerable sacrifice' to get nwnv to Palmerston. The association got* its members together once a year, and every consideration should be given to them. Rules should he- made- as elastic as' possible if they were' to get unity If, seeing that clubs liad not rules, the chairman persisted in his attitude, then there was no doubt about it, it wouldmean disruption of the association, and no one wanted that. They did not want .to move* the headquarters of the association from Palmerston North, but they were out to do the best in the interests of the fanciers as a whole. If' delegates were to be debarred from representing their own clubs, then there was no doubt about it- another association would be formed within 24 hours. Mr. Hooker explained the position in regard to Haw-era, and' said that away back in 1910, when the Winter Show was inaugurated, an arrangement was entered into whereby the poultry show was held in conjunction with the Winter Show, and for years the correspondence' from the association had been addressed Winter Show and Poultry Society. The' registration .with the association was made in the joint names following a conference- with the late Mr. Jarvis. The affiliation fee had always been paid, and no question, had ever been raised until now, when he was told they could not he represented. He urged: that there should he a more conciliatory attitude on the part of the association’. Other delegates continued the discussion, and finally mattere were satisfactorily settled, * New Plymouth and, Hawera and several other’clubs being’ allowed their own delegates and full voting power. It was resolved that the headauarters remain at Palmerston North,"Mr. Hooker expressing the hope that the executive would always remember there were other places to he considered.

Officers wore elected as follows President. Mr. Boyce; vice-presidents Messrs. L. 0. Hooker, J. Patterson treasurer. Mr. W. Grev; secretary M<\ P. T. Robertson.

In comiectiop with the position of secretary, Mr. Hooker urged that it should not ho an honorary position. It had got beyond that, and t]io mooting should fix a salary. Ho. movod that the foo l ho. C2O. This was agreed to. If, was resolved' after a full and free discussion that tho present rules he scrapped and fresh rules drawn up for I lie association.
