PERSONAL ITEMS.
The Hon. O. J. Hawken, Minister of Agriculture, arrives in Hawera to-night and will stay at the Central Hotel. Tomorrow M'r. Hawken will officially open the South Taranaki Winter Show. Mr It. G. RJidling, supervisor of manual instruction in schools for the Taranaki district, is at present in Hawera and is a guest at the Elgmont Hotel. The guests at present staying at the Commercial Hotel include Mr L. J. Schmitt, advisory officer to the Department of Industries and 1 Commerce ; Mr A. El. Westwood, of A. S. Paterson and Co., Wellington; Major.A. E. Ctomvay, of New Plymouth; and Air and Airs Stevenson, of Auckland. It is understood that Sir Alexander Godley succeeds General Sir Charles Alonro as Governor of Gibraltar in September (says the ‘‘London Times”). Sir Alexander Godley was formerly General Officer Commanding the New Zealand Forces. ,
Among the guests staying at the Central Hotel liar .show week are Air W. J. Deem, of .the Agricultural Department, and Air D. S. Robinson, apiary instructor to the. New Zealand Government.
The death lias occurred of Sir Westby Brook Perceval, who was formerly Agent-General for New Zealand and also for Tasmania. Sir Westby Brook Perceval celebrated his 74th birthday recently. He was bom in Tasmania of Irish parentage. ' He was educated at Christ’s College, Christchurch, and at Stonvhurst College, England. He was called to the Bar in 1878, and practised in New Zealand. He marired in 1880 Alias Johnson, of Wellington. He represented one of the Christchurch seats in the New Zealand Parliament from 1887 to 1891. being Chairman of Committees in 1891. From 1891 to 1896 he was Agent-General in London for New Zealand, and for Tasmania 1896 to 1898.
