WEDNESDAY COMPETITION

COMMENT ON 'fflE PLAY. (By “Sticks.”) On Wednesday last on the King Edward Park, JVlawaia and Hawera A ruot and the match resulted in a win for. Hawera A by six goals >to one. The. Mamma. team played a very much, improved ganip, and the Hawera team couVl only notch two to one in the first spell, but in the second .spell they played with more dash and added four more goals, if the iUanaia boys could only hold the bad ammgst the forwards they would scorn more goals. The fault of the Hawera A team is that cheer is too much bunching in the forwards. If the play is on the right side they all seem to work over that side. It is the same with the loft—the whole of the forwards come across. If the forwards will only- keep their places thev lia.ve a good elntnoo of beating Mangatoki. Warner, at right wing, did! not play up to form in the first half. A right wing should never try to score on his own. Always remember that there aire two inside and a centre forward waiting for vonr pass. Neither wings should! try to shoot except on rare occasions.

.Carter. at inside right, pin yeti a much better game and kept, his ,•place well. Wißoir. at centre forward. played his best game to date, one of his ,goals' being a real “corker.” Dick will he a wonderful 'help when xiawera meet Mangatoki. ’Lay, at inside left, played quite a good game, and the goal he sec red was the result of a good piece of work, but he l must keep his place and* learn to keep with; the forwards. MciFadyen, at left wing, played well, and through, following up gave Warner a nice pa,s« to score an eatsy goal. There is one fault with that player—ho moves up too> fast for Wilton’s passes, and nearly always the, oasis is behind him. The left wing cannot take a pass from behind; the pass must he in front. Simon, at left, played his usual sound game, and hit well. Champion at centre-half played another good game. I will he surprised if this player does not get in the representative team. Carter at right-half plays a solid game. When he learns to hit cleanly lie will he a great help to his team. Vo a" less at full-back played splendidly. He is just like a stone wall to pass. I don’t think they can keep him out of the representative team. Jack.son at right full-hack played his

best game to date. He can bit, some when he likes. * Palmer at goal had little to do, but idid it well. Palmer should be a great help to his team when they meet Mangatoki. We have not seen the best of this player yet. Goals were scored for Hawera A against Manaia by Wilton (four) Warner (one), and Lay (one), all being good goals.
