THE EAST COMMITTEE
A ROADING QUESTION.
Members of the Egmont National Park Board and the East Committee and representatives of public bodies in the Stratford district- waited on the Minister of Public Works at Stratford, yesterday, urging the reinstatement of the grant of previously on the estimates for the construction, of a metalled road to the east mountain house. The amount was taken off the Estimates in 1926. The Minister said he fully recognised the importance of developing the mountain as a resort for tourists. He was pleased to know that Stratford people had helped themselves. He promised to do alt in his power to help the committee to obtain what they desired. Full details were given to the Minister of the constitution and representation of the board and the relation of the various committees. Mr. J. C. Robins, chairman of the East Committee, traversed fully the work done by the committee during.the past three years. Mr. Masters said there had been a premise by the Prime Minister that the vote would be reinstated when conditions improved, and they looked to having that promise fulfilled. The' chairman of the Stratford County Council reminded the Minister that the I’em broke Road had been declared a secondary highway, and the road to the hostel was easy to make and had metal available at an easily accessible spot. The Minister said in conclusion that lie might not be able to obtain all the money in one year, but he would help the committee' to the utmost of his power. He realised that such a promise should always he kept.
