Following upon the refusal of the cooks to sign for the Huddart Parker .steamer Barwon, the owners have suspended picking up crews for all ships'. The- trouble is believed; to bo the outcome of the vessel’s sailing last week from Adelaide without cooks. The crew, who ere all unionists, are. .being paid victualling allowance. It is understood the cooks are acting under union orders, but it is believed that the trouble will be speedily settled and will not interrupt the resumption of the normal services. MARINE STEWARDS’ CLAIMS. SYDNEY, June 19. As a counter claim to the marine stewards, whose new log, claiming increased wages and shorter hours, lias been submitted to the Arbitration Court the owners have submitted a log asking for a general reduction of wages and an increase in the daily hours of work. SECRETARY’S MESSAGE TO OWNERS. ANOTHER CALL WOULD BE SUCCESSFUL. Received 9.35 a.m. to-day. SYDNEY, June 20. The secretary of the Marine Cooks’ Union (Mr. Tudehope) states that he dees not anticipate serious trouble. He has dispatched a telegram to the shipowners at Melbourne pointing out that the terms of the settlement for the cooks’ strike provided for pickingup places at the union rooms ; further, that there is a strong feeling against the Barwan, which arrived at Sydney wtihout cooks. He was confident that another call for, cooks made to-day would be successful. He added that hitches are bound to occur, but these will disappear with a better understanding.
