MANUTAHI.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) GENERAL. A great deal of south-east weather has been sweeping across the district of late, with the result that a wintry aspect is being assumed by the countryside. The season has been wonderfully mild, with the result that vegetables are plentiful. At the school a crop of early potatoes sown in April has been partly earthed up. One severe frost settled on the crop, but it was saved by a sprinkling of water just before sunrise. A number of children journeyed to Patea to assist in the Welcome to the Governor-General and Lady Fergusson. The by-roads are now receiving attention and are much improved. EUCHRE PARTY AND DANCE.

On Wednesday last a very successful euchre party and dance was held by the hall committee. Visitors from other districts rolled up in force and extra tables had to be requisitioned. After a sterling contest Mrs. Harvie proved to be the winner of the ladies’ trophy, Mr. A. Wills of the men’s, and Miss Broadley and Mr. R. Schwass of the consolation prizes. After the first dance a dainty supper was handed round, then dancing was carried on until two o’clock. Messrs J. Couch and C Barclav carried out the duties of M.C.’s. The Mascot Orchestra rendered excellent music. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. As a committee was not elected at the general meeting of householders a second meeting was called, but owing to the paucity of attendance this also was a failure. Perhaps the rough night deterred many from attending. PERSONAL. Mrs. O’Sullivan is visiting Mrs. Scowan. in New Plymouth. Mr. W. Smart is visiting the Waikato. • Mrs. Padl is staying with Mrs. Harvie. Mrs. G. Geary has left for the South Island, where she intends to reside in future. Mr. J. Adams is shoi-tly leaving for Alton, where he has secured a large sharemilking contract.
