“OLD WOUNDS.”
ANZAC .SERVICES. Af.VVOR OF PATE A’B OPINION. The Mayor of Pa tea, Mr. P. ;S. Finlayson, the other day expressed his opinion that Anzac Day services should be conducted in the vinrious churches. lie was taken to task by the Knltaramea and Alton Bible Class, who wrote to the Patea Borough 'Council objecting to the manner in which the Mayor had refused to move in the holding- of a combined service in the Town IT all on Anzac Day. At the Council’s meeting on Afondav the Mayor said he had attended four Anzac Day services, acting as conductor of the local band, but after the last service he tiud attended, he had made a solemn vow, that ho would never ag'ain take such a part. It. was almost more than lie could bear to conduct, the band whilst playing “The Garland of Flowers,” and face the mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters of those who had laid down their lives. It seemed to him to 'be tearing open the old wounds which time was now so slowly healing. The bereaved ones did not need a public service to bring home to them their loss, lie considered such services should .be -coniineted in the various churches.
