TUG-O’-WAR TOURNEY.

FOR MAN AT A BAND

ELTHAM AND AWATUNA WINNERS. The second l and final evening of interesting and exciting contests in the tug-o’-war tourney organised on behalf of the- instrument fund for the Manaia Band was held in the- Town Hall last night, and resulted in Eltham winning the heavy-weight competition and Awatuna the light-weight. As on the opening evening, the arrangements were excellently made- and capably carried out under the direction of an energetic committee and- officials in cooperation with the honorary secretary (Mr. J. D. Robinson), to all of whom the band owes much fcr tlieir good work throughout the tourney. At the conclusion of the events the chairman of the Town Board (Mr. N. C. Innes), speaking on behalf of the band, thanked the public, including visitors from other parts, for their support, and the woi'kers for the good service- rendered. He said the band needed about £SOO, and had already organised -several special efforts for the fund. The tourney, he said, had- been enjoyed hv all, and had produced many stirring contests. He then presented the prizes to the 'winners and congratulated them on their success. The results were as below: HEAVY-WEIGHT. Eltham A heat Awatuna; Manaia A beat Awatuna, after one of the- best pulls of the evening, Manaia winning just on the sound of time. Final. —Eltham A heat Manaia- A.
