YESTERDAY’S COMPETITION GAMES.

WON BY FRASER ROAD AND CITY

The Wednesday Rugby * competition was advanced a further stage yesterday afternoon, when two matches were played on the show grounds. Fraser Road team gained a 10 point victory over Whareroa after a good forward tussle. City and Olumgai put up a great game. At half-time neither side had .scored, but in the second session the town team outplayed their opponents, running out winners by the substantial margin of 14 points to 3. The matches were played in Hawera in order to assist the selectors in picking the representative team to play at Marton. WHAREROA v. FRASER ROAD Whareroa kicked off with the wind behind them, and took the game to the (opposing line. Some loose play near the line ensued until the Blues cleared to centre, but at this juncture the game was held up for some time through B. Hughes being knocked out, eventually leaving the field. Just after resuming Whareroa were awarded a free kick, which availed nothing. E. Hughes making a good attempt. From the line-out City' gained slightly, hut the Blacks forced the game into their opponents territory where Carncross saved well. From a lineout the Blacks improved, but were penalised for offside. The kick gave no advantage to. City and from a scrum in their 2-3 the Yellows’ relieved, but a knock-on in midfield ended in a scrum, the Blacks again getting the ball and when within a lew yards oi the Yellow line Carncross saved with a good mark. The City forwards set up a solid rush which took the game into the Black’s 25 and from tight play' the ball went out at the corner. From a free kick just after to the Blacks, Hunt found the line at halfway with a strong kick, the Blacks gaining a further advantage from the line-out. Offside by City gave the Blacks a chance with a kick at goal, out the ball went wide. The return kick found the Blacks’ full-back caught with the ball and the City forwards made the most of the opportunity. Shortly after the City backs showed up well in a nice passing rush which took the game back to the Blacks’ 25, where the ball went out. Halftime sounded with no score by either side.

City kept up the pressure and with the game in their opponents '25, where they gained further from a line-out ending in a force by the Blacks.
