TUG-O’-WAR.
IN AID OF MANAIA BAND. INTERESTING"CONTESTS. The organisers of the tug-o’-war and lazy stick contests in the Manaia Town Hall, in aid of the instrument fund of the Manaia Band, have every' reason to ce pleased with the results of their e/forts in this competition, which took place last night, in tho course of which
there was much to interest and amuse the spectators. There was a very good attendance considex-ing the unpleasant weather pi evading, and all thoroughly enjoyed the evening’s fun. To the committee and the honorary secretary (Mr. J. D. Robertson) is due much credit for the smooth and expeditious running of the tourney. The officials were: Judge, Mr. John llussell; starter, Mr. J. A. Hansen; timekeeper, Mr. Jas. O’Hca; stewards, Messrs J. H r . Paterson, F. Mourie, J. Christie. The returns for the lix'st night were fairly good, over £32 being taken by doors and nominations. Twenty-two teams had entered, and seventeen faced the starter. Results were as below : LIGHT-WEIGHT (10s t. 71b). First round.—Manaia beat Manaia Band; Waiteika beat Hawera; Inaha and Awatuna drew. In the pull-olf Awatuna won by an inch, the contest lasting one and a half minutes and being full of interest. Mata beat Kaponga; Opunake beat Arawhata R; Waiteika heat Manaia B after a thrilling contest and won only on the last thirty seconds; Arawhata A beat Rawhitiroa. Second round. —Hawera beat Manaia Band; Opunake beat Waiteika A; Awatuna beat Mata; Arawhata A beat Opunake. HEAVY-WEIGHT (13st.). First round.—Awatuna beat Strati ford A; Eitliam beat Manaia A; Strat- ! ford S a bye. Second round.—Awatuna beat Stratford B. LAZY STlCK—Light-weight. First round.—Reardon beat Greenbanks; Gedge beat Bailey; Harris beat Gimblett; Murphy beat Walker. Second round. —Murphy beat Gedge; Harris beat Reardon. LAZY STlCK—Heavy-weight. In the heavy-weight division to-night Stratford A will meet Mantua A, Stratford JJ having a bye, and Awatuna will meet Eltham.. In the light-weight (two lives) AVaiteika will meet Arawhata A, Awatuna having a bye. In the single life the draw will he: Arawhata B v. Bawhitiroa; Inaha v. Kaponga; Manaia B v. Jpumi-ke; Hatvera v. Mata. In the lazy stick pull, Murphy and Harris will meet in Lhe final of tin l light-weight division.
