A huge' iron and steel merger, embracing Hosking’s Iron ancl Steel Company, of Lithgow, Port Kembla and other parts of Australia, with the Australian business of Dorman, Long and Co., Ltd. (with the exception of the Sydney harbour bridge contract), and Baldwin’s Ltd., and Howard Smith, Ltd., lias been completed The new company will be known as Australian Iron and Steel, Ltd., with a. nominal capital of £5,000,000. WEST AUSTRALIAN ELECTION. PERTH. May 18. The latest figures of the Legislative Council election show that Mrs W. J. Hickey, honorary Labour Minister, was defeated. HUGE PROPERTY DEAL. PERTH. May 15. A hug? property, Bonlathann station, of 390.009 acres, carrying 40,000 sheep, near Carnarvon, changed hands for £130,000.

DIED OF THTRST. DARWIN. May 18. Two tramps, named William Watsford, of Sydney, and Harry Femey, apparent l v died of thirst on a lonely trek.to Darwin some weeks' ago. Their bodies were found seven miles! apart in the Northern Territory, both within a .short- distance of water. Wntsford hind -stripped off hi#? clothing, had eaten grass and was apparently delirious before his death.
