H AAV ERA A (4) v. M ANA IA 1. In the first cup game of the season, at Manaia on Wednesday, Hawera A team defeated Manaia by 4 goals to 1. Hawera attacked right from the opening bully, play being within the Manaia. twenty-five for some time. Hawera pushed hard, but were unlucky, three penalty corners being given in quick succession. Manaia broke away with a good passing movement from Bndd to Gyde, to Tosswill, resulting in a goal by Tosswill. Hawera.at. once retaliated, in a goal by Tosswill. Hawera at once retaliated with a sustained attack, and after four penalty corners Wilton equalised the score. Just on half-time Hawera broke away from the centre, and a fine passing rush brought play to the Manaia circle. A shot at goal was well stopped by N. Ansley, custodian, but the ball was at once scooped up by an attacker and Carter found the net, the half-time score being: Hawera 2, Manaia 1. Upon resuming, J. Anderson replaced Ansley for Manaia, the latter having to' return to work. The game waxed fast and exciting. The long grass proved a big handicap to speed. During a hard Hawera attack Paine was conspicuous in good defensive work. After much up and down play Hawera brought the leather right into the home circle, and 'an exciting scramble ended in another goal. This set-back livened up the home' side considerably, and a strong attack was broken by Vowless and Rimon. The visiting forwards eventually returned to the assault), and a. .shot at goal, 'although stopped! by the goalie, went through to make tho final score: Hawera 4, Manaia 1. Messrs Kemp and Miller were referees. Though beaten, tho Manaia team played very well indeed, considering the voutli of the teams and a game or two such as played against Hawera. should help immensely in making better team work.
