MOTOR LICENSES.
EXFIRY DATE QUESTION. ARGUMENT BEFQEaOtXQTHER MAGISTRATE. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) HAMILTON, May 16. The anomalous position raised by the decision of Mr. Luxford, S.M., that motorists’ driving licenses need not be renewed owing to- an inadvertent omission in the Act of 1927, was reviewed to-day before Mr. Platts, S.M. Counsel for the borough, Mr. Swarbrick, in prosecuting further cases for failure to renew licenses, argued that the motor regulations of 1925 provided that licenses should not expire until March 31 the following year. The regulations were still in force, even if the amending Act were) silent as to the date of expiry. He contended that a local authority was competent to issue licenses for a stated period. Nothing in the enactment extended the term of the licenses. Mr. Luxford had endeavoured to write into the Act that the licenses continued indefinitely, but it was a matter of common sense that licenses must have an expiry date. Mr. Platts reserved liis decision.
