The Borough Inspector reported at last nigut’s meeting of the Borough Council that there were three prosecutions during the month, two under the by-laws and one under the Motor Vehicles Act. Horner, local representative of the Associated Board of the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Alusic (London) has received advice that Air. Russell Elliott Chester, B.A. (London), A.R.A.AI., will conduct the practical examinations in New Zealand. He was born in AVinnipeg, Canada, and received his musical education in Brussels, winning the first prize of the Brussels Conservatoire in 1914. He continued his studies at the Royal Academy of Music (London), where- he became first sub-professor in 1918, obtaining several prizes in composition and elocution, and later, in 1926, was appointed one of the professors of pianoforte. The Christchurch City Council has rejected an offer of £9475 for the city market site and the buildings thereon. The Labour Councillors argued that tliet price was not adequate and that the market was making a profit, so the Council need not sell the land at a sacrifice. Richard Green, appeared in the ■Magistrate’s Court at Christchurch yesterday, charged with stealing £lO 5s bd, which charge was amended to allege the stealing or £3. The circumstances were that Green accepted the sum of £3 to invest on Padlock at a recent trotting meeting. Padlock won, and the dividend on £3 amounted to £lO 5s 6d. It was reobserved by astronomers both at the Cape and Johannesburg in February, fhe protographic magnitude was then 3.9. Tire comet was again re-observed oeally last evening by Mr F. Whilst a couple of Kakaramea residents were levelling the croquet court on Saturday, they unearthed, about five inches below the surface, two half-crowns,-a wedding ring, and three buttons, all lying together. One halfcrown is dated 1844 and the other 1875 ; both pieces were in a good state of preservation, and. the ring was scarcely tarnished (writes the “Star’s” correspondent).
