LIQOUR REFERENDUM.

CAAIPAIGN IN NEW SOUTH WALES. ROMAN CATHOLIC ATTITUDE DEFINED. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT.) Received 11.30 a.m. to-day. SYDNEY, May 15. The campaign for' and against the liquor referendum to be taken in September throughout New South Wales ■has commenced, speakers addressing meetings in all parts. The liquor trade is appointing organisers in each suburb at high salaries. The Roman Catholic attitude was defined at Forbes by Dr. Hayden, Bishop of Forbes and Wiclannia, who declared that his Church hoped that prohibition would not be carried, as it was an infringement of the liberty of the citizens. There was no reason for penalising the multiude for the sins of the few. He considered that the Government was exceeding its powers in taking the referendum.
