CANON COMPTON. The sudden death at New Plymouth .jesterdav of Rev. Canon A. W. H. v.ompt-011, M.A., recalls the strenuous worn done by him nearly thirty years ag-o,’ when he was vicar of the Waimate Plains parochial district, in which was included the whole area from the \Y aingongoro River to (Jpunake. It was a wide, stretch of country fox - one man to control, and Canon Compton had to do all Ills’ travelling by horse or gig. xxe neier spared himself, and old settlers in that district —now divided into two parishes—will recall the gi’eat work done by him during the years when lie was i - esident vicar there. _ • ■Canon Compton came out to New Zealand from London to take up_ that work, and when he left that district lie became successively warden of Hadfield Hostel, Wellington, then vicar of Grey town; and later - of Brooklyn (Wellington) and St. John’s (Wanganui). He went out as a chaplain to the South Airican war, and was awarded the Queen’s medal. At Cambridge University, where ho graduated, -he secured distinction as a classical scholar, and was also noted for his athletic prowess. He was also noted as a fine_ tenor singer, and olcl residents of this district will recall his many appearances in public, when lie delighted his audiences. Some years ago he suffered a severe nervous breakdown, and although .he had had a trip Home in search of health, and had done little work since, he never really recovered and had practically given up church work. He had no relatives in the Dominion.
