SOLARIUM DECLINED.

DIRECTOR-GENERAL DOES NOT APPROVE. [by telegbapb—press association.] NAPIER, May 14. When the offer of a Hawke's Bay resident of £3OOO to convert the roof of the wards at the Napier hospital into a solarium on the lines of a proposal made by Dr. J. Allen Berry, the medical superintendent, was recently brought to the notice of Dr. T. H. A. Valintine, Director-General of Health, the latter declined to approve the scheme. Reference to Dr. Valintine’s attitude was made at a meeting of the hospital board to-day by Dr. Berry. He thought it might have been reasonable on the grounds of economy, if there had not been the offer to provide the funds required. Under the present circumstances he could not, understand it. /“Dr. Valintine ,is of the opinion. Dr. Berry said, “that this is an American innovation. It is not. Suneure is the work of British scientists. It is not a. fad, but is work done on a scientific basis.” One member did not see why Dr. Valintine should override the benevolence of people. o*n the recommendation of the medical superintendent the board did not decide on any definite course of action at present.
