FARMERS’ TRAINS
DEPARTMENT’S ARRANGEMENTS,
BUSINESS AGENT IN HAWERA. At the meeting of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, South Taranaki executive, this morning, Mr. J. Pringle, commercial agent of the- New Zealand Railways was present by invitation, and spoke- on -the -subject of farmers’ trains in general and with particular reference to -the special train to be run on May 28 to Hamilton, arriving there about midnight. He referred to the issue of tickets at reduced rates to Rotorua so that farmers- could go by the special to Hamilton and then by ordinary trains to Rotorua at their leisure. He added that he and his staff was- always pleased to wait on, fanners’ meetings. He added that in addition, the Department was arranging special -trips for farmers during the school holidays, May -and August, for which excursion fares would -be charged. There would ;be two agricultural experts on the special -train to give lectures -e-n route. Referring to the- excursions l -generally, Mr. Pringle s-aid that endeavours were being made -to -secure, better accommodation. Mr. H. E. Johnson -congratulated the Railway Department on its enterprise in the effort to make the railways- popular and also to enable farmers to help themselves. The- excursion would help to bring farmers together for they would -travel as a band of farmers with a common interest in the trips. Air. Pringle said, in answer to a question, that arrangements could be, -made for farmers to -go to the -South Island, the Department issuing tickets for rail and -boat. fare. Ho said that actually passenger traffic had been- falling off and the commercial agents were out to bring this -back by the. personal touch and wore trying to assist by honest endeavour to give Teal service. A hearty vo-te of thanks was accorded to Air. Pringle for his attendance- at the meeting and the useful and interesting information given.
