[BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] HAMILTON, April 30.
The official visit of Sir Charles Ferrgusson a.nd Lady Alice Ferguses on to ;Ngaruawahia to-day was made notable not only by the enthusiasm of the welcome, but by the Governor-General’S outspoken appeal for freer immigration. His Ebccelleney recalled the happy childhood of ’himself and Lady Alice when their respective fathers were Governors and added: “In going through New Zealand one should always have in mind that the country lias been built up in one man’s life time and has been made from bush and swamp and scrub into smiling pas:mes.” It was the determination of a small haudfull of people that was responsible. for this. One should not wonder at what was not yet achieved, but ffiould marvel at the splendid work already accomplished. Speaking, urn immigration Sir Oiarlefa said: “Until this country is developed to the full, it will never .reach it full prosperity. It is a pity that the tide of immigration is being stemmed Every immigrant that conies tq the country, if of the 1 ight stamp, is a producer and is ttie greatest help the country can have He is not a. man who will.take bread but of others’ mouths:— he will become not -only an employee, but .a purchaser of the country’s, .goods. It is the only way secondary industries can develop. “We should remember always that increased population is what we must have.’’ lie said.
Visiting Princess To Puea’s model pa., His Excellency referred to his father’s visit 55 years ago and the advice then given—“ Forget the past.” Since that time peace had reigned between the two peoples and Maori and pakeha.had learned to live together as brothers and sisters. Long might they continue to do so. Princess To Puea had realised that if the country was to 10 great, the people must look forward. Me praised the Princess’ great work in education and social welfare.
