SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

MEETING OF HOUSEHOLDERS. REPORTS FROM MANAIA. The annual meeting of the householders was held in the school room, Maiiaia, on Monday 30th April, Mr, ./as. Dakersi presiding over an attendance of 20. ■ CHAIRMAN’S REPORT. I have pleasure in reporting an active and successful year ahd congratulate the headmaster and staff on the excellent result obtained in ‘ examinations. At the last meeting of householders it was suggested that a football field: should lie levelled in tlie horse paddock. This has been done and as soon as hedges are cut down the field will be ready for use. A gramophone was also suggested, this is also On the way. Tim library has also i©eeived attention and valuable additions have been made' and, thanks to the ladies’ committee, there is still a. substantial amount- of money to be spent on books.

The school was well represented at both the Hawera Musical Competitions and- the Dixon Banner sports, and both met with considerable success..

Arrangements' were made and parents permission obtained to have the children inoculated against diptheria. Advantage of this was taken by a large number, rmd work carried out by doctor Mecredy. Dental work has received attention and arrangements* have been made to have the children attended to at Eltham, but the committee should keep in view the establishment of a clinic at Manaia..

The trees- planted 18 months ago have made Excellent growth, and on Arbor Day, the plantation was extended, seven or eight hundred trees of many different varieties being planted, and are doing well. Work was carried out by pupils under W. R. Syme’s supervision.' A ladies’ * committe- has been very busy, and have held several shop days with the result that at the end of the year each pupil in the school was presented with a book at the- breaking-up ceremony, together with the prizes wonin connection with the Boys’ and Girls’ Club competitions. The annual picnic was held at Kaupokonui beach, and was a decided, success. A school concert was held in August, and the children were trained by the teachers and -put- on splendid programmes. The lawns, garden and hedges have been well cared f-or. Sports have not been neglected, and matches in football, cricket, basket hall and tennis have been played during the- year, and in these the school has had a good share of wins. Some inside games nave ■also been procured and have proved very popular. * HEAD MASTER’S REPORT.

The average attendance for the fourquarters, ended 31st- March, 1928, has been 242, December 27th 212, September 215, June 213. This- in spide of the epidemics of whooping cough, measles and- chicken-pox with the- additional cases of scarlatina. The attendance h-as- been avell maintained. Primary roll is now- 262, and given favour able condition-, it is within the bounds of possibility that this year the- schori may rise a grade, which requires- 241 in average for three quarters of the tear in succession or f-or four quarters at intervals. The secondary roll is 26 with an average- for last quarter of 25, which puts this department on- a sounder footing than it has ever been before. The staff consists of Headmaster, four permanent assistants, one substituted assistant, one additional assistant and one probationer in the primary department, with one secondary assistant. TREASURER’S STATEMENT. The treasurer submitted a- statement showing balance in hank at March 1, 1927, of £l6 6s 4d, and sundry receipts £209 13s- 5d with an expenditure of £196 8s 7d leaving a credit balance- ol £29 11 2d. Attendances of members school committee meetings. Dakers 12, Edwards 12, Budge 11, Chesnall 11, Clague 10, Larsen 10, Butter 8, Sadler 8, Abbott 2, The following committee was elected for the ensuing year:—Messrs. A. Gamlin, G. Edwards. Rev. R. Miller, .T. Olngr.e, T. A. Bridee, A. Sadler, G. Butter, Vincent and Airs. Gamlin. Votes of thanks- were heartily accorded to Mr. Daker-s (chairman), AH. F. Ohisnall (secretary), Headmaster and Ms staff for their excellent service- during the past year. Among the various matters- discussed at the meeting were the dental clinic, sheds for cycles and daylight saving, and it was resolved- that in connection uith the latter, that in the event of “summer time” being brought into force again, it be a- recommendation to

the- incoming committee- that the school assemble a.t 9.30 n.m. Re- the hot water service- for thecocoa, etc., for the children, it was resolved that the teachers he thanked for what had been done, and recommended the committe to still further assist in the matter. NEW COMMITTEE AIEET. At the conclusion of the householders’ meeting, the new committee met and appointed the folowing officers. Chairman, -Air. A. Gamlin; secretary, Mrs. A. Gamlin and treasurer, Mr. T. A. Bridge. It was also decided that the chairman and treasurer be authorised to onerate on the bank account. The monthly meeting of the committee was fixed for the second Wednesday of each month. Re tenders for box-thorn hedge trimming, that of Mr. J. Cat-ley was accepted. It was- also derided to purchase one- cord of rata firewood to be procured in 9 inch lengths. •
