HAWERA CIVIC AFFAIRS.

COUNCIL’S MONTHLY MEETING. ROUTINE BUSINESS. The monthly meeting of the Hawera Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. • There were present: The Mayor, Mr E. A. Pacey and Ors. A. Reid, W. Butler, G. J. Bayley, J. M. Townsend 1 , E. Morrissey, R. H. Leiece, W. G. Simpson. Apologies for absence we’re received from Crs. AV. G. AA'iadkley, and AY. G. Strange. - The monthly progress .report rendered by the engineer (Mr J. Stnrrock) was adopted as follows: — , ■One edge of the tannacadam roadway, of GHo ver Roiad has been repaired and strengthened with metal grouted with bitumen. The claim for part payment has been sent into, the Highways Board, together with estimates for repairs to the' other side of the roadway next summer. The Caplen Estate roads, paths, sewer ancl water pipes, are being connected to the council’s works. Repairs to paths at .points of alterations to poles are being carried out. Unemployed workmen have called at the engineer’s office and asked to liaye their names put on a list. He had informed them that the council had decided nothing in the matter, buit he had no. instructions. On consultation with, the Mayor, it was decided to take particular's for future reference. At present there were eleven men with dependents on the list. The usual maintenance and repair works have had attention. Recommendations madie (inter alia) by the general committee were adopted as follows :

That a letter of .appreciation of the .services rendered by ]\lr F. G. Coleman as sanitary inspector be sent him..

The inspector (Mr L. Hunt) reported (inter alia) that inspection for annual licences was carried out in respect of licenses was carried out in respect of fensive trades, eatingbouses, .barbers bakers, ice creiam shops .and trades and bakers. This inspection was carried out in conjunction with Dir. Macredy, Senior Inspector Gardiner and Inspector Coleman. A portion of High Street was also inspected. Prosecutions during the month numbered two. Hines amounted to £2 and two drivers’ licenses were cancelled for a month. For the quarter ended March 31, the •sanitary inspector (Mr F. G. Gofeman) reported as follow : —During the quarter I was relieving at New Plymouth, and only urgent work was done for the first two months. Two cases of scarlet fever, those _cases of diphtheria, and one case of T.B. were notified and attended to. Four drSins of a total length of. 300f.t were inspected and tested. Sixteen ,samples of milk were taken, and all complied with tire regulations. Sixty seven premises were inspected in company with Senior Inspector Gardiner and Inspector Hunt. As I understand, that this is my last report to the. council, I have much pleasure in wishing the council steady and continuous progress, especially in all matters relating to health. „ , .. The librarian, Miss M. F. Newland, reported that 14 new members joined during, the month. Thirty-six new books were, bought, chiefly fiction, and a few good juvenile. The good selection of general literait-uro put on to the shelves during the last few months was very favourably commented on by many members. At present the fiction shelves are looking somewhat bare, owing to a clearance of about 600 old and well-mended volumes.. The good and popular anthem would lie replaced at once in addition to the. usual new lot. being added each week. FINANCE. The financial statement gave details of balances in respective accounts at March 31 as follow :

The .statement of estimates and actual expenditure showed that- for the year ended March 31, a sum 0f.£17,364' had been spent, compared, with estimates providing for £20,078, and leaving a credit balance of £2714. Estimates for the 1925-29 year, for routine work of the engineer’is department, providing for a (total poSsibe expenditure of £6400, reducible t0.£5550 by reimbursements by way of rubbish removal fees and on account of work undertaken for private individuals and trading concerns, were submitted by the engineer. A comparative table l of actual costs, with, estimates for the vea.r ended March 31, 1928. .showed that £6856 had been expended' out of estimates totalling £7387. The estimates were referred to the works committee. The abattoir report stated that during the month 99 cows, 53 heifers, .430 sheep, 92 lambs, 26 calves and 67 pigs were slaughtered. Fees and rents totalled £IOB 11s 2d (£99 14s 6d and £8 16s 8d respectively), the fees l>eing' £5 13s 9d less than in March, 1927.# * Total fees for, 12 months ended March 31 were £lO 3s 6d less than those for last financial year.

A report of business, at the abattoir for the year ended March 31 gave the following particulars (figures for the previous 12 months being shown in parentheses): Stock slaughtered.—Cattle 1776 (1840), sheep 5193 (4926). lambs 950 (1119), calves 253.(248), pigs 731 (656). Condemnations. 4—< Cattle 28 (22), sheep 15 (7), pigs 11 (15). Fees totalled £1.202 5s '3d (£1212 8s 9d) a decrease of £lO 3s 6d. Rents were were the same, £lO6. Taking into account the arrears for the previous year the actual receipts were £1313 6s Bd, as compared with £1532 3s 4d expenditure, an excess of expenditure over income of £209 16s Bd.
