OLYMPIC FUNDS.
DONATION FROAI BOROUGH COUNCIL.
In response to a letter received from the president of the Hawera Amateur Athletic Club (Mr. W. A. Spra-gg), the' Borough Council at its meeting on Tuesday evening decided to donate £5 towards the Olympic fund. -_ , “I am thoroughly in sympathy .with the project-, and have personally made contributions, but it is doubtful whether the council is able to make a donation,” said the Mayor (Mr. E. A. Pa-c-ey) when- the letter was read inviting the council to give its support to the appeal. Cr. E. Morrissey: “I don’t- think we are- able to make a contribution.” The Mayor: ‘‘lf a- donation' were made it would have to he from the unauthorised expenditure quota.” Cr. W. G. Simpson gave the opinion that, in view of the fact that an- athlete from the town was to visit the gathering of competitors from- all over the world, the people of the town would he pleased if the council made a donation. He moved that £5 he granted.
“X think it a great honour for the town to lie represented,” said Cr. Leece, who seconded the motion. He considered the grant- should: he £lO instead of £5.
The Mayor: “I daresay there are a number of people who, while unable to put their hands in their pockets, would' he pleased to -have the council contribute to the fund. If it can he done without trouble with the aocoiints I am quite prepared to support the motion. ”
Cr. Morrissey thought that, as the townspeople had already contributed generously to the fund, the amount proposed by Cr. Simpson was sufficient.
The motion was carried l without dissent.
