A MURDERER PAYS THE PENALTY BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT Received 9.40 a.m. to-day. OTTAWA, March 23. George McDonald was hanged, at Valloyfiekl at. 5.47 o’clock this morning. No newspaper men were admitted to the hanging. The murderer mounted the gallows’ steps firmly. A telegram was received at the gaol during the night from the reprieved wife, Doris, which read: “To-morrow Mass and communion will be offered. I will never cease to pray for you. May the Blessed Lady receive you at the gate of Heaven. ’ ’
On reading the message McDonald murmured “God bless her soul.’’
Before the hanging, Mass was celebrated and McDonald received the Holy Communion. Seventy-five prisoners, officials and detectives' attended the service. There was a delay of half an hour, the hangman, Ellis, insisting that, it should be daylight before he carried out his duties.
