Greymouth is shortly to toe the scene •of a kinema production (reports the “Grey Kiver Argus”). The producing company will be a local one, as also the scenario writer, and the kinematographer. The piece to be produced is a comedy.

The Hawera Plunket Society is holding a “Bring and Buy” afternoon an the Scouts’ Hall, Albion Street, on Thursday, March 22. The society hopes that all mothers and those interested will assist to make the occasion a success. Donations of anything saleable will be most gladly accepted. An important function will bo hold in Hawera during Winter Show week in July. The New Zealand Beekeepers ’ Association has decided to hold its annual meeting and conference here which will last for three days. This is an acknowledgment of the extension of the industry in South Taranaki. The manager of the Dunedin Tourist Bureau states that the wireless telephone which was recently installed at Glade House lia s proved very successful. This, incidentally, is the first telephone of its kind in New Zealand. It operates from To Anau up the lake, and was installed at a cost of £2OOO. An ordinary telephone service in that locality would have involved an expen diture of fully £IO,OOO. Excellent congregaions were present at the Normanby Methodist Church yesterday, when at the morning and afternoon services the harvest festival was celebrated. Rev. W. _J. Oxbrow preached sermons appropriate to the occasion at both services. The festival will conclude this evening with a concert and sale of produce.

For the steer-riding competition at Waverley on Saturday there was a large entry and keen' competition, a remarkable display of “steersmanship.” There were no less than 16 competitors, and all showed good form. The winner was Mr. H. Walker (Waverley), with Mr. Edgar Harrison, i junr., second. A severe earthquake was recorded i l the Dominion observatory at Wellington on Friday. The first impube was felt at 4.3.3 p.m., and the record lasted four Ihiours. It indicia ted that the origin was in the earthquake region near New Caledonia and the New Hebrides. A letter tabled at the meeting oi the Hawera Hospital Board today, in reply to a circular received from the Hospital Boards Association, with reference to the relief of unemployment up to December 31 last year, indicated that the number of cases dealt with locally was SO, the number of persons affected being 117. The bulk of these, it was stated, were not residents of the iiospital board’s district, the cases being mostly those of men who had j been helped in their endeavours to find employment. Consideration of the recommendation that jurther protection should be afforded at a fountain in the grounds of the Old People’s Home at Hawera was given by the Hospital Board at its monthly meeting to-day, when the rider of tbe jury which inquired into the recent fatality was received. Alter a short discussion the board decided to have the pool of the- fountain formed into a rockery.

Donations of £2OO made by the late iMr. O. C. Woods, which have been applied for the purpose of providing a tennis court at the Hawera hospital, were the subject of appreciative comment at the monthly meeting of the board to-day, and it was decided to have erected at the entrance to the court a plate bearing the name of Mr. Woods, together with a suitable inscription recording that the provision of the tennis court was made possible as a result of his generosity.

The Stratford district jubilee, which commences next week, is attracting considerable attention and interest throughout the Dominion. The festivities are to be held on a lavish scale, and the week’s carnival is being eagerly anticipated. Already a great many applications for invitations to the celebration and luncheon to the old pioneers have been received from old identities of Stratford from all parts of New Zealand.

The eighteenth day of several months during the year is a day set apart for meetings in connection with the late prophet, Te Whiti and his teachings. March, June, September and November are the months in which these meetings are usually held. Yesterday the meeting fixed for this month was held at Barihaka, and it was very largely attended by Maoris from all over the province and by many pakehas. As is customary with the Maoris, all the visitors were most hospitably received and entertained by the Maori people.

Saying that a town that really relied on the farming community should nox object to a certain amount of sheep drafting on Sunday when the work was a necessity, being an annual occurrence with a very large number of sheep, the magistrate' dismissed charges of work-' ing on Sunday by drafting sheep at saleyards, laid against a number of stock agents at Paliiatua on Saturday, states a Press Association message. One defendant explained that |the drafting could not have been done in time on the morning of the sale. The same course had been adopted in previous years on the occasion of fairs. Tt was necessary to have the ewe fait- on Monday to avoid clashing with regular sales in neighbouring towns. The magistrate agreed to take the ease on its merits.
