The Hon. G. 11. Snowball, Speaker of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, has died at the age of 68, states a Melbourne message.

The death has occurred at Christchurch of Mr. L. A. Stringer, Registrar of the Canterbury College. ' Hewas 58 years of age. The Mayor of Eltham, Mr. I. J. Bridger, returned to Eltham last night from attending the municipal conference at Nelson. Mr. E'. C. Cachemaille, the wellknown Wellington musician, is at present on a short vacation in Hawera, and is staying at the Central Hotel. Mr. P. Sandilands, stipendiary steward to the New Zealand Racing Conference, is officiating at Opunake today, and during his stay in the district is a guest at the Central Hotel.

The Hawera Starr-Bowkett Building Society held on extraordinary meeting last evening in order to fill four vacancies on the directorate. Messns F. Squire. J. Ranch, M. Barraclough, and 11. Robinson were elected.

The Hon. G. J. Anderson, Minister of Labour and Mines, leaves for England by the Mataroa, for the purpose of consulting medical specialists. It is understood that it is unlikely he will again resume Ministerial responsibility. The Prime Minister stated yesterday afternoon that the New Ministerial arrangements rendered necessary by Mr. Anderson’s departure and the death of Mr. Bollard last year will not be announced until after Mr. Anderson’s departure.—Press Association.

Yesterday afternoon Mr. H. A. Brunetted following upon the formal handing over of his business to the purchasers, entertained his successors and liis. late staff at afternoon tea. During this pleasant interval from ordinary j business duties, Mr. Brunette took opportunity to mark his appreciation of the good services rendered him by Miss M. Whyte and Mr. T. Lay, by presenting the former with a set of stainless cutlery and the latter with a watchmaker’s lathe complete On the eve of a trip to the Old - Country, Mr. and Mrs. A. Rouse were entertained at an evening,-at the residence of Mrs. T. C. Hobbs, South Road, on Wednesday, the hostesses being Mrs. H. J. Webber and Mrs. Hobbs. Cards, competitions, and music were enjoyed by the thirty guests * present. In wishing Mr. and Mrs. Rouse bon voyage, Mr. Hobbs presented them with souvenirs of the esteem in which they were held, to Mrs. Rouse a fountain pen, and to Mr. Rouse a pocket wallet. The evening concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” They will leave New Zealand on March 31, and expect to be away about nine months. Services rendered by Mr. L. O. Hooker, of Hawera, were the subject of much comment in appreciative vein at the statutory annual meeting of .the South Committee of the Egmont National Park Board, yesterday. “As a publicity man Mr. Hooker is the best friend the committee has. He has done more than any other individual towards making known the attractions of Dawson Falls and the vicinity as a touring and health resort,” said the chairman (Mr, W. G. Walkley), whose remarks were endorsed by members. On the motion of Mr. N. C. Innes it was resolved to forward a letter to Mr. -Hooker expressing the committee’s appreciation of his activities.
