SLEEP FOR BEAUTY.

Sleep is beauty’s greatest ally. Cosmetics, face-opwder and manipulations are very ineffectual substitutes for “nature’s sweet restorer” —sleep - It is the custom nowadays for moment to decry the habits of our grandmothers. That they were handicapped in the matter of clothes: must be admitted. But it is doubtful if wo have the pull over them in any other direction. Their unaided complexions were far superior, and this was because they knew the value of “early to bed and early to rise.” The old saw, “two hours before midnight is worth four after,” has much truth in it, and those who dance through the small hours, however* much they may score in muscle, cannot expect to retain a clear complexion, because they are robbing themselves of the relaxation which the body demands. During sleep the body recuperates. Elvery organ, even the heart, is more or less resting. Old poispns accumulated during the day are worked off. New strength is being built up for the. conquests of to-morrow. How much we are losing by ignoring our sleep! Yet the length of time we sleep is not in proportion to the beauty we gain. One can sleep to much, or too little. The quality of tlie sleep is what really matters. Sleep that is of healthy depth, ■not too< deep or too light, will be of more value to health than a drugged' or fitful sleep of double its length. To achieve this desirable depth, considerable attention must he paid to diet and exercise.

Keep your window wide open. Sleep on a fairly firm bed with the pillow raised and try to think of nothing. A hop pillow is helpful. Try to relax every muscle. “Make the body sink like a dead weight on the bed and think calmly of your lover” is a Japanese motto which every woman desirous of beauty will do well to follow.
