NEW CATHOLIC CHURCH

FOUNDATION 'STONE LAYING CEREMONY.

The ceremony of lajdng the foundation stone of the new Catholic Church in Victoria Street, will take place on Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock. His Grace Archbishop Redwood will perform t.he ceremony and Archbishop O’Shea is also making a special journey to Hawera to be present. It is anticipated there will be a large and representative gathering of priests from all parts of the province in addition to a big attendance of the laity. The church now under construction is associated in a very special way with the memory of the late Monsignor Power, who devoted -many years of his life to raising -the funds to build it. It will be remembered that lie was stricken with his last illness on the day that tenders for flic .building were received. Although the foundation stone is onjy now being laid the walls of the edifice are already some twelve feet high and it is possible to gain some idea of what the finished appearance will be. The plans were drawn by .Mr F. de J. Clere, of Wellington, who is well known as the designer of St. Mary’s of the Angels, Wellington. St. Joseph’s, Hawera, although not as massive as that edifice, will surpass even it in architectural beauty. The contract price is £13,600, and with other expenses the total cost should be in the vicinity of £16,000. Of this amount the late Monsigiror Power accu. mutated £11,141, so there is still about £SOOO to collect.
