LEAGUE OF NATIONS
SMUOGLED MACHINE-GUNS. TENSE LITTLE SCENE. v cacu press association- copy mom GENEVA, March 8. The decision of the League Council in connection with the St_ Gothard ma-chine-gun incident (when a committee was set up to investigate), was followed by a tense little scene in which Al. Tanczos and M. Titulescu (Hungary) appeared to be losing control of themselves. Sir Austen Chamberlain intervened and asked: “What has become of the birth certificates?” (meaning the waybills of the machine-guns). ‘‘Why has Hungary become so excited at the prospect of the League holding an inquiry ?” ‘‘The way-bills,” exclaimed M. Tanczos, ‘‘here they are; five of them!” Continuing, he declared that Hungary was not excited. They knew that the guns from Italy were en route to Poland, and there had not been an application ior a transit license. M. Briand asked why Hungary destroyed the machine-guns when the question was before the League. M. Tanczos replied that they acted merely in conformity with the international railway convention for the destruction of smuggled goods.
