TENNIS.

NEW PLYMOUTH TOURNEY. BARTLEET WINS FROM LAMPE. FINALS TO-DAY Interest is fully maintained in the play at the tennis tourney at New Plymouth, which was continued iin ideal weathier yesterday, and with courts istiid in perfect order. The match which drew most attention wa§ that between Bartleet and Lainpe, for the winner oi that would go to the finals and is conoideued the likeliest to win the championship. Bartleet will now play the winner of the Wallace (Waverley) v. Wilson t,VV'ellington) match iin the final of the men’s singles. Wilson is in great form, as was shown by his line play in beating Griffiths, of Auckland.

Interesting matches were those' in which Lampe beat J. E. Stedman, while A. Stedman, in a strenuous contest, was beaten by Wallace. In both cases the experience and courtcraft oi file older players prevailed. In the Bartleet-Lampe match, the latter, strinking form at once, ran out a winner 6 —3, but the second went easily to Bartleet <3—l. The third was a clinking: struggle. It went to three all, and then Lampe got in front, and twice his opponent evened the score, five all being called. Again Lampe went ahead by wonderful play, and. he wanted but a point in the twelfth game to win the match 7—5, but Bartleet made a great recovery and even six all. Still the struggle otinned and iseven all was called. Th: fifteenth and deciding game went to vantage to Lampe on several occasions, lmt playing with remarkable steadiness, Bartleet recovered and a point ill his favour gave him the match and the lead for the first time in the contest. He went on to win the next and the match, after a strenuous struggle. The well-known Waverley pair, Wallace and Dickie, are playing an great form, and look very likely to have a big say in this last stages of the contest for the championship doublesThev have to play Lampe and Parker to-day. The other semi-fin af will be between Bartleet and Griffiths and Ellis and Wilson.

In the ladies’ singles, Mrs Melody (Wellington) has readied the semi-final and will to-day play the winner, Mrs Soott-Watson and Miss Myers (Wanganui). Miss Tracy will play the winner of the Miss McPherson —Miss Fairbrother match, and the finalists will b? decided by these two matches.

Mrs Melody, with her partner, Mies Sliortt, will also be in the finals, and await the winners of the Miss Tracy and Miss Cameron v. Misses Myers and Golver. The winners of this match meet Mrs Scott-Watson and Miss Sloman, and the pair winning that match will play in the final. BOYS’ SINGLES.

Keen contests took place between Mitchell (Napier) and J. J. McCarthy (Hawera) and between A. Dickie (Waverley) and McHardie (New Plymouth). Both went to three sets, in each case the loser took the .second, and a fine struggle took pace in the third. Mitchell won 6—2, but Dickie had to play to 7—5 before the decision was in his favour.
