DOMINION’S POPULATION
NEARLY A MILLION AND A HALE
The population of New Zealand, its dependencies, and the Mandated Territory of Western Samoa virtually reached the one and a half million mark on April 1 fast. Exclusive of Maoris, the- population of the Dominion proper was 1,373,740, comprised of 701,774 males and 671,972 females. The Maoris numbered 64,234 — 33,564 men and 30,670 women. Thus the total population of New Zealand proper was 1,437,980. On September 30 last this figure had risen to 1,410,415 On April 1, 1926, it was 1,409,812. In the Cook Islands and Niue on April 1, 1927, there were 7143 men and 6945 women; 523 men and 510 women ’in Tokelau Islands (census 1926); and iu Western Samoa 21, 975 men and 20,053 women. The grand total amounted, therefore, to 1,495,129. Urban Areas. At the same date the estimated population, including Maoris, in the urban areas Was : Auckland 202,400 Wellington 1267750 Christ church Dunedin 83,250 Wanganui , • 27,180 Invercargill 22,590 Palmerston North 20,540 Napier 18,680 Timam 17,330 Hamilton, 17,140 New Plymouth. 16,790 Gisborne 15,370 Hastings 15,050 Nelson 12*010 T’he estimated population of Wellington City was 101,400, and that of Auckland City 90,140. That of Oliristchurch City was 85,575, and of Dunedin City 65,480.
