The conditions of the track, which was in excellent order for the opening of the carnival was not impaired by the first day’s usage and the attendance during the early events though apparently below .the big assembly of yesterday, was (again of sufficient dimensions to demonstrate the continued popidarity of' the meeting.

The full field 1 of fourteen went out for the Maiden Handicap, Upoko, who had secured second honours in the previous day’s Juvenile, being given most support with a margin of 3G tickets on Paul Lucerne. Silent was well down the list with only one-eighth of the favourite’s total. Scariff was left when the tapes rose. Royal Lover went to the front from Silent, Corneroff, Fortalico and Paul Lucerne, and at the halfmile the leading order was Royal Lover, Paul Lucerne,' Silent, Mendip, or.d Corneroff. The favourite reached iiic lead turning for home, Royal Lover then lying second, attended by Paul Lucerne, Mendip and Corneroff. At the half distance Paul Lucerne took the van, while Silent and Fortalice came with a fine burst, Paul Lucerne getting the decision by half a head from Silent, with Fortalice on the inside a half-length back, closely followed by Royal Lover, Mendip and Corneroff. The Swell was all but the outsider, though comparatively well backed with £SOO less than the favourite, while Kawhakina was fourth choice. From a good start Always went to the front rrom Resin, Royal Acre," and The Swell and along the back the same pilot was on terms with Royal Acre, followed by The Swell, Onward, Kawhakina and Resin. Passing the five furlong post. Royal Acre was temporarily in command, but when the half mile was reached, the order was Kawhakina, Illingar, Royal Acre, The Swell, Onward, Whisogne and Always. Racing into the straight, Kawhaikina was just in front of Illingar, Royal Acre The Swell, Onward and Whisogne, but The Swell’s finishing rally gave him his second victory of the moeting, Kawhakina being a neck back second with the favourite half a length a way followed by Illingar, Whisogne, Resin and Onward. For reasons diffieut to understand the public in a good betting race allowed Orazone to take preference for favouritism with a margin of 35 tickets from Piuthair. Manly was the next order, with £IOO below the favourite, while- H ipo’.s total was nearly £3OO less than the sum en-. trusted to Orazone. The tapes- rose to a splendid start, and passing the stand for the first time the leading order was Glengariff, Piuthair, Hipo, Golden Krist, Yoma; Manly, Bent and Orazone, with Bonogne tailing the field. Golden Krist took the van racing into the back, Hipo coining next, followed by Glengariff, Piuthair, Sleepy Sol, Yoma, Vivo, Orazone, Bent, and Bonogne.
