B’OOKMAKING ALLEGED. TRIPLE COUP IN HAWERA. Shortly before noon to-day the premises of Joseph Urlich, restaurant proprietor, of Princess Street, Claude Albert Gleeson and Walter Jeffrey May, tobaeeouists of Union Street, were simultaneously raided by the police and rhe proprietors arrested on charges of booKinaking and of keeping common gaming houses. Almost before the wan. dering passers-by had realised what had happened, the police were in possession and the proprietors unostentatiously removed to the police station, where they were formally charged with the offenees-and remanded to appear on January 26. While Constable Tocher visited the shop of .Gleeson, Detective Meiklejohn and Constable Mullan arrested May over the road and Sergeant Henry and Constable Lennn executed the warrant in respect of Urlich. The various prmises were searched and any goods purporting to bear the matter confiscated.

Later in the afternoon the three accused appeared before Mr G. 11. Buckcridge, J.P., and were each charged with carrying on the business of a bookmaker and; with peeping a common gaming house. The date of the alleged offences was Tuesday last in each case.

Detective Meiklejohn applied for a remand to January 26, which was granted. Bail was allowed in respect of each accused in their own recognisance of £IOO and one surety of £IOO.

ARRESTS AT ELTHAM. TWO DEFENDANTS IN COURT. Arrested early this afternoon oil charges; of bookmabing, John Dewar McKay, ironmonger, and Tony Novak restaurant keeper, of Eltham, appear'd in the Eltham Court before Mr T. T. Bridger, J.R. On the application of Sergt. Martin, the cases were remanded for a week. Both defendants were admitted to bail Vav in his own recognisance of Clso and Novak in personal reoognisiimo of £SO. and approved security for CIOO.
