STATEMENT OE MINISTER OF LANDS.

AUCKLAND, Deo. 2S. “We have to face the fact that there may be a fairly big overflow of unemployed next winter ,therefore any place tnat would absorb a number of men would be valuable,” said the Hon. A. D. McLeod to-day. The Minister said that with the Hon. O. J. Haw ken, and possibly the Rt'. Hon. J. G. Coates, he was going north to ascertain the possibility of bringing a portion of the gumlands of the far north into productivity. He mentioned the Kerikeri block of 20,000 acres, the possibilities of which had never been properly examined. There was also a similar block near Taupo.
