FOREIGN LEGION.
AN ENGLISH DESERTER. ERENCH GOVERMENT’S CLEMENCY. RUGBY,Dec. 19. The Foreign Secretary was asked in the House of Commons if his attention had been called to tiie statement that John Harvey, ol Car dill, who uas sentenced to eignt years’ imprisonment ior deserting Iroiu the foreign Legion and had been released by tne French Government, was to be sent back to the Legion to complete his unexpired service. Sir Austen Chamberlain again exaccording to his iniormation tne statement reierred to was incorrect. Harvey would be released irom bis military obligations as soon as. the usual formalities in connection with his discharge lias been completed. a Sir Austen Chamberlain again expressed the thanks of the British Government to the French Government for this act of courtesy, and said: “1 may add that an Englishman who voluntarily joins a foreign legion under another jurisdiction cannot expect that this Government can interiere.”
