ELTHAM SCHOOL.

BREAK-UP FOR HOLIDAYS. A bitterly cold wind militated against a large attendance of parents at the Eltham School break-up ceremony yesterday. The programme opened with a sports meeting, at which the magnanimous spirit of the pupils was again exemplified, they being, quite satisfied to contest each event without reward—for sport’s sake —as was the case at the close of last year. The programme was, however, not completed owing to the unexpected early arrival from Hawera of Messrs. E. Dixon and M. F. Purser to present the Dixon Banner and personally congratulate the scholars on having won this tangible nroof of athletic superiority for the second year in succession. PRESENTATION OF CERTIFICATES The chairman called upon Sir Walter Carncross to present various certificates won during the year. Sir Walter briefly addressed the pupils, urging them to always remember their lessons, endeavour to maintain the honour of the school. and never forget the sacrifices made' by parents to ensure a sound education to their boys and girls. On being told the school motto by the pupils: “Learn by doing; knowledge is power.” the speaker said it was not as good as a motto he could quote, which was “Play the game.” He would like the school to adopt it and act up to it by being honourable and upright through life, alwavs remembering that the strong should' help the weak. In conclusion, he wished the boys and girls a pleasant holiday and success through life. It gave him very great pleasure to present the certificates.
